Barbara’s biggest personal challenge was walking 26.2 miles in the Honolulu Marathon to collect donations for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society; it's no surprise that her favorite quote is:

“A journey of a thousand miles starts under one’s feet”                                                                             Lao Tzu

Then
I became interested in marathon walkers when I signed-up to act as a motivation coach to participants in the San Diego Marathon.  The coaching took place on the morning of the race and our task was to talk to the participants about their hopes and concerns.  Well I had a great time with the "Team in Training" groups.  They were passionate and ready to go.  So the one that became motivated was me!

A few months later I read an article that told about "Team in Training" offering a chance to learn how to walk a marathon. I was primed and ready!  I attended the meeting and signed-up.  Of course I walked away thinking "what have I gotten myself into?

It turned out to be an amazing journey through all I had learned in my studies in psychology, sport psychology, personal trainer certification, spirituality and self-esteem.

There was no going back - I was in it for the long haul 26.2 miles and I finished. I wasn't the last person off the course - what a learning experience.

That is why I decided to research how different were runners and walkers.
